What is the MSPE?
The MSPE or Medical Student Performance Evaluation is an overall, objective summary of your activities throughout medical school.
- During June-July, you’ll fill out an online form with your achievements in research, community service, and extracurricular/professional activities during medical school
- You will also add preclinical comments that you would like to include in your MSPE. You have a character limit and are required to keep them verbatim, so be judicious with what you choose
- You’ll submit this form at the beginning of August!
- The committee meets during the month of August to finalize your MSPE comments and final ranking.
MSPE components
For all of these, follow the format using the sample RAIT.
- Noteworthy characteristics – three characteristics that you choose and would like to highlight on your MSPE. You can describe each with 2-3 sentences.
- Research – be sure to list what it was (abstract, presentation, peer-reviewed article, book chapter) and whether it has been published/accepted or submitted.
- Don’t need to flesh out details about what you did, but mention if you were first author
- Student/professional organizations – list what organization and your role, including leadership at MedZou
- Community service – list all community service, including volunteering at MedZou
- Preclinical comments – you can move comments around and change verb tenses, but you can’t change actual wording of the comments. 1600 character limit.
How is my final ranking determined?
No one really knows exactly how, but it is based on your research, community service, extracurriculars/leadership activities, M2 grades, M3 clerkship grades, and professionalism. All of those things are somehow scored and your ranking is based on that score.
You should receive your ranking and MSPE after review by the beginning of September.
